ABOUT THE LILY

The history of the lily dates back to Biblical times and has traditionally been a symbol of love, purity, innocence and mortality. The word, lily, is derived from the Latin word for this plant family, lilium, the species of which are considered the true lilies. Whilst many other plants may have “lily” in their common names, they may not actually be related to true lilies. Lilium, in turn was derived from the Greek word, leiron. The lily was so revered by the Greeks that it was associated with Hera, the queen of the gods and was said to have first sprouted from her milk.

Today we associate the lily with beauty, elegance and celebration, a flower that is often displayed at exhibitions, smart hotel lobbies, weddings and other events.  The flowers are large, often fragrant, and come in a range of colours and varieties.  Sunny Hill Flowers focus on the most beautiful of the species, consistently producing the highest quality cut lilies.
